Tony Preedy was born in Hereford in January 1939 to shopkeeping parents and moved to Shropshire in 1944. His autism shaped his young life, causing him to enter Technical College; Tony then started studies towards becoming a Chartered Engineer whilst an apprentice with REME, then at Bristol Polytechnic and with the BBC, eventually being elected a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He has worked as a grocer’s delivery boy, and later as an engineer in broadcasting, spending some time in an Arab country, and in law in the USA. Tony married Jean, a designer of soft toys, whilst living on Ascension Island; after retirement in 1999 they moved back to Shropshire. He enjoys sailing, restoring classic boats and vehicles, walking, and amateur radio; he has contributed to magazines for the radio industry, to the Technical Review of the European Broadcasting Union. Tony survives Jean, his wife of 52 years, and has two daughters.
