‘But Liberal Democracy enshrines the ideals of Freedom and Equality,’ said Elspeth.

‘There are no ideals in Christianity, there are Commandments only,’ said Johannes quietly. Elspeth was shocked but allowed him to go on.

‘Christ said that he had not come to destroy the Law or the Prophets but to fulfil them and he condensed the Ten Commandments into two positive Commandments, “You shall love the Lord your God and you shall love your neighbour as yourself ”. He also taught, “Love your enemies”, and “One Commandment I give unto you that you love one another as I have loved you”. In Christianity, therefore, Love is the fulfilment of the law that is, when we Love God and observe the Commandments in our relationships with others. Christ’s: ‘Be perfect even as your father in heaven is perfect’ is not a call to aim at achieving some ideal or other and Christ by addressing each and every one of us is allowing us to recognise that perfection is not beyond any of us and that we – even the weakest among us – is loved by God. Perfection is inf initely more than ideals and love is inf initely greater than idealism. Christianity is not a mismatch of different ideas and ideals and Love is not a construct of the human mind.’
