Valerie Baker was born in Bournemouth in 1958 and was educated at Glenmoor Secondary Modern School for Girls and Bournemouth Technical College. She is married with two step children who currently live with their biological mother. She says that words have always been a part of her life, from her secretarial days of manual typewriters, through electrical typewriters and word processors and all the way to modern computers. She worked as a technical author for a software house for the past sixteen years. Upon reaching early retirement age, she decided that this possibility did not suit her and that she would rather occupy herself writing a story about her mischievous cat Blue. She also works alongside her husband as Operational Director and shareholder of their filtration company. She enjoys watching and sponsoring speedway and attends the occasional rock concerts. Under the Chin is her first book and what a delight it is.
